Professional Registration

Self-regulated mental health professions
In the UK, many mental health and wellbeing roles are self-regulated, meaning they do not require statutory registration with a government regulator. These include roles such as counsellors, psychotherapists, coaches and mental health support workers.
While registration is not legally required, many practitioners choose to join professional bodies that set standards for training, ethics, supervision and ongoing development.
The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) oversees this landscape by accrediting voluntary registers through its Accredited Registers programme. Although the PSA does not regulate individuals directly, accreditation provides assurance that a register meets recognised standards for professional practice and public protection.
