The Occupational Psychologist will play a pivotal role in shaping and embedding a senior leadership competency framework within the London Fire Brigade. This role is central to the development of leadership programmes that are aligned with organisational goals and cultural transformation, particularly in moving away from hierarchical leadership styles toward more psychologically safe and inclusive environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a senior leadership competency framework, building on the existing organisational framework.
  • Design and support leadership development programmes (e.g. residentials, secondments, classroom-based sessions).
  • Provide psychometric feedback to senior leaders in a constructive and engaging manner.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including the Leadership and Management Academy and Talent Team, to ensure alignment and integration.
  • Engage with senior leaders to influence and embed leadership behaviours.
  • Promote psychological safety and inclusive leadership practices across the organisation.
  • Work in a hybrid model, attending in-person meetings and site visits across London as required

Top 3 Essential Skills/Experience

1. Experience with Leadership Development & Competency Frameworks

  • Ideally has worked on or contributed to the development of senior leadership frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of leadership theory and practice.

2. Confidence in Engaging Senior Stakeholders

  • Proven ability to influence and communicate effectively with senior leaders.
  • Comfortable delivering psychometric feedback and facilitating leadership conversations.

3. Public Sector or Emergency Services Insight

  • Understanding of hierarchical cultures and the challenges of cultural change.
  • Experience working in or with public sector organisations, ideally emergency services.

  • Ability to communicate complex psychological concepts in plain English.
  • Awareness of neurodiversity and inclusive practices.
  • Strategic thinker with a global leadership perspective.
  • Collaborative and self-directed, with the ability to lead on key initiatives

Hybrid working Working Pattern: Hybrid - expected to be on-site 40% of the time (HQ or stations).

Hours: Flexible (e.g. 8am-4pm or compressed hours); core hours are 9am-5pm.

Location: London-based, travel via public transport expected.

Interview Process

  • Single-stage interview with Mary-Anne Pilkington.
  • Optional written exercise to assess structured written communication.

Candidate must be HCPC Occupational or Practitioner Psychologist registered

Base Rate: £208.97 PAYE or £274.91Umbrella
