About the Role
As a Support Classroom Assistant, you will work alongside qualified teachers and healthcare professionals to provide tailored educational support to children and young people receiving treatment in hospital or accessing education due to medical needs. You'll help create a nurturing, inclusive and stimulating learning environment that promotes engagement, emotional wellbeing and academic progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with a variety of needs including SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), and ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition).
- Assist in the delivery of differentiated learning activities, both 1:1 and in small groups.
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation using trauma-informed approaches.
- Liaise with teaching staff, medical teams and families to ensure continuity of learning.
- Support transitions back to mainstream or specialist settings where appropriate.
Desirable Skills & Experience
We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds. The following transferable skills and experience are highly desirable:
- Experience working with children or young people in educational, care or support settings.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, child development and inclusive education practices.
- Understanding of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and how to support individual learning needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Empathy, patience and resilience in emotionally demanding situations.
Qualifications (Desirable but not essential)
- Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
- Training in Team Teach, Makaton, or other relevant interventions.
- First Aid or Mental Health First Aid certification.
