Whether you're exploring a career change or starting fresh, this guide will walk you through the essential steps to become a qualified CBT practitioner in the UK. Discover what CBT involves, the accredited training routes, and the professional bodies that can support your development.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that helps individuals understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours—and make practical changes to improve wellbeing.

Its goal is to help people identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, develop coping strategies, and foster healthier thinking patterns and behaviour, primarily focusing on current issues rather than delving extensively into the past.

Like with all types of psychotherapy, it's essential that CBT therapists learn the 9 core counselling skills so they are able to listen to and support clients without judgement or criticism.
