About us

Let's prevent suicide today. Because tomorrow's too late.

Life can be wonderful. Life can be tough. 1 in 4 of us have had suicidal thoughts.

Samaritans is the charity that prevents suicide through the power of human connection.

Connecting people in crisis with trained volunteers who will always listen. People calling for change with those who need to listen. People who’ve been there before, with those struggling now.

I’ve called Samaritans myself in the past and again that human connection helped me get through my darkest times. I always say their helpline is a lifesaving piece of equipment. It’s a defibrillator for emotions. That’s how important it is. I was fighting for my life, and Samaritans brought me out of crisis.

Every 10 seconds, we answer a call for help. Thousands of volunteers from all walks of life are here every day and night. Listening without judgment. Whoever you are. Whatever your background, beliefs, faith or identity.

We make sure there’s always someone to listen if you’re in crisis or feeling suicidal. And we unite to raise awareness of people’s experiences, create partnerships and campaign for suicide prevention.

Every hour. Every day. Every life. If you believe the power of human connection can prevent suicide, join us.

I’d disappeared into the woods near my house in the middle of the night, battling with suicidal thoughts and struggling to cope with the thoughts and feelings that were overwhelming me. Thankfully I made it back home and called Samaritans who supported me through this difficult period until I felt safe again.  Calling Samaritans was the best choice that I could have made in that moment.

Be there for people who desperately need someone

Our incredible volunteers run more than 200 branches and locations across the UK and Ireland. They offer their time to help to deliver our 24-hour emotional support service to callers in many ways, from answering telephones and emails, to fundraising, generating publicity, administration and finance.

You don’t need to have been through a particular life experience or be from a certain walk of life. Anyone who wants to help others, is tolerant and open-minded is welcome to apply.

What you get out of being a volunteer

Above all you’ll have the incredible satisfaction of knowing you’re helping people who are in despair. In addition, you’ll learn valuable new skills, make new friendships, and be part of an amazing group of people.

Ways you can help Samaritans

There are lots of ways you can volunteer for Samaritans, it all depends on what skills you have and how much time you’ve got to give.

Listening volunteers answer calls and messages from people who really need someone to talk to. You’ll be based in one of 201 branches in the UK and Ireland.
