About us

We are the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) – the UK’s largest, member-led, professional body for traditional acupuncturists.

We have nearly 3,000 members. We're governed by an elected Governing Board and driven by a specialist staff team.

Our members belong to an accredited register, regulated and approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health & Social Care (PSA). The PSA protects the public by overseeing the regulation and registration of healthcare professionals - including statutorily regulated professions, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and Accredited Registers like the BAcC. This offers a quality mark for high standards of training, safe practice and professional conduct.

We work with the following organisations

  • The European Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (ETCMA) – an umbrella organisation for professional associations that represents different fields within traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
  • British Acupuncture Accreditation Board (BAAB) – whose work is the accreditation of higher education level programmes leading to a professional qualification in acupuncture.
  • Research Council of Complementary Medicine (RCCM) – an organisation which promotes research that will widen the availability of and access to safe and effective complementary medicine for patients within the National Health Service in the UK, helping prevent disease and improve patients’ health and quality of life.
  • Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) – the only organisation in the UK that focuses on the herbal element of Chinese Medicine (TCM).

PSA accreditation

The BAcC was one of the first organisations to become a PSA Accredited Register. The Accredited Register scheme is designed to recognise that an accredited organisation maintains high standards of training, safe practice and professional conduct where the operational sector is not covered by statutory regulation.

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is the leading self-regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture in the UK.
