Job summary

We have 33 theatres across both Coventry and Rugby sites. As a level one major trauma centre we provide 24/7 emergency and trauma surgery and take polytrauma patients from around the region. We perform state of the art Robotic surgery for the previously inoperable, are a regional centre for neurosurgery and specialise in cardiac and renal transplant surgery.

Our wards and theatres have fully automated medicines storage (56 Omnicells) across 2 sites.

Other specialties include Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Ear Nose and Throat, Maxillo Facial, Urology, Colorectal, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Plastics and Breast.

The Pharmacy department at UHCW NHS Trust is undergoing many changes and looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated Pharmacy Technician, to join our busy and friendly pharmacy department. You will be a confident communicator, with excellent written and verbal skills. You will need to have some hospital experience and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and be flexible regarding working practices.

Applicants must have excellent IT skills, have good communication and interpersonal skills and work in a positive manner, with other healthcare professionals.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

Candidates must hold S/NVQ Level III in Pharmacy Services and BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

The post is full time (37.5hrs per week with weekends/late shifts and bank holidays as per rota)

The post holder will be part of a team of Clinical Pharmacy Technicians involved in providing a range of pharmacy services on behalf of the Trust to its patients and customers. All activities will be carried out as deemed appropriate to the needs of the patient in agreement with the ward Pharmacist and in accordance with Trust and Pharmacy department SOPs.

You will be joining a large team of Technicians of all specialties and grades. You will be responsible for ensuring the service operates efficiently to provide patients with their medication safely and in a timely manner.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Participate in medicines management activities, drug history taking, dispensing for discharge, re-use of patients own medication, transcription of discharge medication, ordering medication for patients, including One Stop Dispensing items and checking patients POD lockers.
  • To assist the Pharmacist in obtaining an accurate patient drug history using a variety of information sources e.g. interview, patients notes, contacting GP etc.
  • To interpret and check electronic or paper prescriptions to ensure that the information is clear and unambiguous with regard to the drug, dosage etc. annotating additional instructions to improve clarity or compliance where appropriate.
  • To ensure that there is no therapeutic duplication, omission, unnecessary or contra-indicated medication prescribed, referring to the Pharmacist where appropriate.
  • To document details of any medicine related interventions made by self and ensure action taken is recorded.
  • To organise and maintain the patient specific supply of medicines working closely with Pharmacists and using the systems in place for this process.
  • To work with the ward team to manage medicines through Omnicell and Medicines Returns Units to improve cost effectiveness, reduce waste and save time.
  • To accurately interpret prescriptions using clinical knowledge of medication and the patients treatment to supply medication for the patient as required. Liaising with the Pharmacist where the knowledge required goes beyond their scope of responsibility.
  • To initiate the medicine supply function in a timely manner with regard to the urgency of prescribed items.
  • To liaise with the pharmacy Procurement Team to ensure adequate stock drugs supplies are available at ward level taking into account prescribing variances.
  • To continually assess patients needs and assisting them or parents/carers by use of information to take the correct medication in the prescribed dose at the right time, referring them to a pharmacist when necessary.
  • To monitor and take appropriate action to ensure the efficient transfer of medication with patients as they move beds or wards.
  • To take action to ensure that discharge medication is supplied to patients on their designated wards in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide a range of information to medical staff, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals regarding medication and pharmacy related issues within their scope of responsibility.
  • To participate in the completion of ward Controlled Drug and medicines management audits in accordance with agreed schedules.
  • To support stock list reviews and update stock lists in a timely manner to reduce waste and ensure appropriate supply of medicines working with the Omnicell Team and Ward Services Manager.
  • To investigate and resolve any problems or complaint at ward level regarding the supply, storage and safe custody of drugs which may involve difficult communication with nursing staff, patients and other colleagues if non-adherence to Trust Regulations is identified.
  • To ensure unlicensed and high-cost drugs are prescribed in accordance to Trust policy and correct information is documented.
