Job summary
The Radiotherapy departments at NCCC provide a highly specialist clinical technical service in the treatment of cancer patients, receiving approximately 7800 new patient referrals per year.
Radiotherapy involves the use of ionising radiation in targeting tumours; the radiation is delivered to the patient using highly complex equipment including CT, MRI and Linear Accelerators. The radiotherapy departments in both Newcastle and Carlisle benefit from state-of-the-art equipment which includes 8 linear accelerators, 2 CT scanners, an MRI scanner and an SXT unit in Newcastle and 2 linear accelerators, a CT scanner and dedicated slots on a diagnostic MRI in Carlisle.
The Radiographers who operate the treatment machines and imaging equipment are educated to degree level and have a thorough understanding of the principles of oncology, radiation physics, radiation safety, radiobiology and care of the cancer patient. Patients may attend the department for a single episode of treatment or for a course of treatment lasting up to 6 weeks. Typically, between 35 - 50 patients receive radiotherapy per day on a treatment machine. The team of Radiographers take responsibility for management of the patient workload and assessing the patient's condition on a daily basis. The service has responsibility to train BSc radiotherapy students in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Liverpool across both BSc and MSc programmes and including apprenticeships.
Main duties of the job
The Radiographers work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, along with Consultant Clinical Oncologists, Specialist Registrars, Physicist, Medical Technologist & Specialist Nurses in achieving a high standard of care for the patient.
The post holder will provide technical expertise and radiographer leadership for the radiotherapy service within their specialist area.
