The secondary school counselor supports the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students in the high school division at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju. The counselor provides individual and group counseling, delivers preventive and developmental programs, and collaborates with teachers, administrators, and parents to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
Job responsibilities
Student support and counseling
Build positive, trusting, and developmentally appropriate relationships with students.
Provide individual and small-group counseling to address academic, social, and emotional needs.
Respond effectively to students in crisis, offering immediate support and collaborating with school leaders on intervention strategies.
Serve as an on-call resource for urgent student needs as required.
Program development and prevention
Design and implement programs that promote students’ emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skills.
Lead and teach social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons by grade level throughout the academic year.
Collaborate with faculty to integrate SEL principles into the advisory program and daily school life.
Facilitate monthly professional development sessions for teachers focused on supporting students with Tier 1 social-emotional challenges.
Collaboration and leadership
Work collaboratively as part of the Student Support Team (SST) and Safeguarding Team to ensure coordinated care and appropriate interventions for students.
Serve as the College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Coordinator.
Communicate effectively and compassionately with students, parents, and colleagues, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Model and uphold the mission, vision, and core values of SJA Jeju.
Administrative and organizational responsibilities
Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and interventions.
Contribute to the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) through data-informed practices and collaboration.
Participate in advisory and school-wide initiatives as needed.
Manage time and responsibilities effectively to meet multiple deadlines and commitments.
Required qualifications
Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing social-emotional counseling to middle and/or high school students in an international school setting.
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, school counseling, or a related field.
Fluency in English (spoken and written).
Eligibility for a work visa in Korea, including a clean background check (no criminal record, including misdemeanors).
Desired qualifications
Master’s degree in clinical or school counseling, psychology, or a related field.
Certified school counselor (U.S., Canada, U.K., or equivalent credential).
Experience providing counseling support in a boarding school environment.
Experience working within an MTSS framework.
Fluency in Korean and/or Mandarin Chinese is an asset.
