Middle School Counselor Department: Middle School Status of Hire: Overseas Direct Hire (ODH) Reports To: Middle School PrincipalObjective: Provide for the counseling needs of YISS middle school students.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Middle school classroom teaching or school counseling experience
- Current certification or licensure
The middle school counselor is responsible for providing a well-designed counseling program that supports and guides students in their academic, personal, and spiritual growth. In order to maintain knowledge of current best practices in counseling and guidance, the guidance counselor is expected to avail himself/herself of necessary professional development opportunities and/or continuing education. The professional development opportunities need approval by his/her immediate supervisor.
Performance Objectives:
- Serve as a resource for parents, teachers, and staff regarding the developmental needs of middle school students.
- Conduct informational sessions for parents and staff of the middle school regarding issues pertinent to raising, working with, and supporting middle school children (transition, developmental needs, social-emotional needs, and support, etc.)
- Consult with school staff members (SLS, ELL, MS Principals) regarding the most appropriate placement of students.
- Coordinate the development of student schedules.
- Collaborate with teachers and administration to provide targeted interventions for students who are struggling academically or behaviorally.
- Provide time for individual or small group counseling sessions dealing with topics such as academic failure, attendance problems, family issues, suicide prevention, behavior problems, and peer relationships.
- Refer children and their parents to special programs, specialists, and outside agencies. ● Conduct orientation activities for students new to the school.
- Provide middle school transition activities both for into and out of middle school. ● Teach elective courses in the middle school (not to exceed 1 block).
- Coordinate weekly Oasis Assemblies (Ossemblies) and Oasis SEW.
- Interpret standardized test results to parents, students, and teachers and help teachers develop strategies to use the information to improve future test scores.
- Assist with the K-12 school-testing program.
- Conduct large and small group student sessions focused on social-emotional topics. ● Serve as a member of the middle school leadership team.
- Supervise extracurricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned.
- Attend and participate in devotions, teachers’ meetings, evening programs involving the teacher’s students, or as requested by the administration, and other meetings as assigned.
- Model Christ’s teachings through interpersonal skills, respectful relationships, and a willingness to learn and interact with others of different faith traditions.
- Meet everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism.
- Fosters relationships with parents, students, staff, and the community that support the academic and spiritual aspects of the school’s ministry in both in-class and out-of-class environments.
- Follow school policies, procedures, rules, regulations, guidelines, and the provisions of the contract, as outlined in the Faculty and Staff Handbook, and other school publications.
- Perform assigned supervisory duties and responsibilities (before school, break, lunch, after school, etc.) and inform the proper administrator in advance if unable to fulfill any assigned duty.
- Prepare adequate information and materials for a substitute teacher.
- Maintain and submit regular and accurate attendance records, grades, and other relevant information on time.
- Cooperate with YISS administration in implementing all policies, procedures, and directives governing the operation of the school.
- Safeguard the interests and mission of the school.
- Respectfully submit and demonstrate cooperativeness to constituted authority.
- Demonstrates timeliness in submissions for deadlines, willingness to be proactive in his/her responsibilities, and sensitivity to living and working in a community that relies upon each other for effective ministry.
