Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Events Manager to join our Care Team at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices.

Shooting Star Childrens Hospices provides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child or young person with a life-limiting condition, or whose child has died. Rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families across Surrey, north west London and south west London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our Care Events Team provide an extensive programme of groups and events for the 800 life limited children, their families and bereaved families. There are themed family events, social groups for siblings of different ages, pamper days for mums, counselling groups, bereavement cafe, memorial days and many festive events such as ice skating at Hampton Court. Taking place at our hospices and in the communities we serve, there are 5 to 6 events each week, offering important opportunities for families to make memories together.

Main duties of the job

The Care Events Manager is responsible for the delivery and oversight of the annual programme of events. The Care Event Manager leads the Care Events Team, including an Events Assistant, Events Management Intern, Counsellor and care events volunteers, and working with family support workers, childrens therapists and counsellors to deliver an incredible programme of creative and inclusive experiences. The Care Events Manager works alongside the Lead Therapist and Lead Counsellor to ensure that family support at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices is everything the children and families need it to be.

At a weekly meeting, the team are made aware of children and family members who are struggling and think together about where they might benefit from the opportunity to spend time with others who share similar experiences or receive group therapy. Utilising professional events management skills, each event is planned meticulously to be a safe and inviting space. Providing this opportunity for families is integral to their mental wellbeing.

Shooting Star Childrens Hospices provides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child or young person with a life-limiting condition, or who have been bereaved. Rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families across Surrey, north-west London and south-west London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our specialist care and support is free of charge to families and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It includes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management and pain relief, overnight respite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the whole family.

At the heart of what we do are our dedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism means every family has the opportunity to make every moment count.

It costs £10 million a year to run Shooting Star Childrens Hospices. Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, so we rely on our supporters generosity to keep the service running. We employ 175 members of staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, and support around 700 families.

Wellness events provide a safe space for families to meet others managing similar challenges, access different hospice services, and create family memories together.

Support groups allow family members to develop a network of support, meeting others in similar roles, for example a dads support group for bereaved dads.

Therapy groups deliver specialist psychological interventions in a group setting, including counselling, creative therapies, complementary therapies and EMDR (trauma) therapy.

Working alongside allied health professionals to provide Daily Experiences, a schedule of activities for children and young people at Christophers.

The planning and delivery of children and young peoples Wishes (bucket list activities they wish to complete with their family).

The Care Events Manager leads the team delivering events that support around 800 children and their families, enhancing emotional and social wellbeing. They identify vulnerable families through psychosocial meetings, connecting them with suitable events, groups, or experiences.

Our Care Events offer safe, creative and inclusive experiences that respond to the diverse needs of families we support. Celebrating cultural festivals, milestones and moments of remembrance, they bring families together and ensure no one faces their journey in isolation. These events are a vital part of our holistic care, helping families connect, heal and make meaningful memories.

Main Duties and Key responsibilities

  • Designing and implementing an annual programme of family wellness events, support groups and therapy groups that delivers excellent care and support to children and family members, both at the hospices and venues in the neighbourhoods we serve.
  • Ensuring the Care Events Team understand the current and emerging needs of children, young people and families through working closely with the care services, identifying themes, and through continued individual learning about the needs of families in childrens palliative care.
  • Manage the Care Events Team and responsibility for event teams delivering events across both hospices and community venues.
  • Line managing and developing a large group of Care Events Volunteers, who are key support in the delivery of events.
  • Attending the weekly Psychosocial Leads Clinic and working alongside the Psychosocial Leads to create and achieve annual objectives focused on safe and effective psychosocial care that meets the needs of the populations we serve.
  • Working alongside allied healthcare professionals and the in-house team, co-ordinating a daily experiences schedule at Christophers, so that play, stimulating and therapeutic activities enhance the quality of care and development of children and young people in our care.
  • Ensuring Care Events attendance at MDTs and key meetings, providing updates and managing individual referrals to care events.
  • Planning and delivering wishes requested by children with life-limiting conditions.
  • Working with the care, fundraising and corporate teams to achieve good interface that enhances care provision, upholds our values, supports each others objectives for positive, cohesive working across the charity.
  • Enabling families who do and dont attend groups and events, to share their views and experiences, so they shape this aspect of SSCH care, making it is as accessible and impactful as possible.
  • Governance: reviewing policies, processes and completing audits to strive for the highest quality care.
  • Producing an annual report including stakeholder input, learning, plans and aspirations.
